QUALCOMM STRIKES MAJOR AI CHIP DEAL WITH AMAZON    SAN DIEGO / SEATTLE, September 9, 2026 — Qualcomm has reached a sweeping agreement with Amazon to develop and supply specialized artificial-intelligence chips for data centers, strengthening the semiconductor company’s challenge to Nvidia in the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure market. Under the long-term arrangement, Amazon could purchase up to $60 billion in Qualcomm processors, networking equipment and related technology. The companies will also cooperate on customized chips designed for Amazon’s cloud-computing operations. As part of the agreement, Qualcomm granted Amazon warrants giving it the right to acquire shares worth approximately $4 billion. The warrants carry an exercise price of $161.26 per share and would allow Amazon to benefit financially if the partnership helps increase Qualcomm’s market value.  Qualcomm shares gained more than three percent following reports of the agreement, reflecting investor enthusiasm about the company’s expansion beyond its traditional smartphone business. The San Diego-based chipmaker is best known for the Snapdragon processors and communications technology used in mobile devices. However, slowing smartphone growth, rising component costs and the expected loss of Apple’s modem business have increased pressure on Qualcomm to develop new sources of revenue. Artificial-intelligence data centers represent one of the technology industry’s fastest-growing markets. Companies including Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Meta are spending tens of billions of dollars on processors, servers, energy infrastructure and high-speed networking. Nvidia currently dominates the market for processors used to train and operate advanced AI models. Its success has encouraged semiconductor companies and cloud providers to develop alternative chips that may offer lower costs, improved energy efficiency or greater control over their infrastructure. Qualcomm aims to generate approximately $15 billion annually from data-center chips by 2029. The Amazon agreement could provide the scale and long-term demand needed to establish the company as a significant competitor. The partnership will extend beyond processors. Qualcomm and Amazon plan to develop advanced optical-connectivity systems capable of moving enormous volumes of data between AI chips and servers. Such connections are increasingly important as data centers grow larger and individual AI systems use thousands of processors simultaneously. Traditional electrical connections can consume considerable power and create performance bottlenecks, making high-speed optical technology a critical part of future infrastructure. Qualcomm strengthened its position in this field through its $2.4 billion acquisition of semiconductor company Alphawave. The technology will support its effort to supply a broader range of AI data-center components.  Amazon will also provide additional access to its AWS cloud platform for Qualcomm’s chip-development work. Cloud-based design and simulation tools could reduce the time required to create, test and manufacture new processors. The agreement makes Amazon the latest major cloud provider to work with Qualcomm on AI infrastructure, following collaborations involving Microsoft and Meta. For Amazon, the partnership offers another potential alternative to Nvidia while complementing the custom Trainium and Inferentia processors already developed by its own chip division. Greater competition among suppliers could reduce costs and prevent the company from becoming dependent on a single manufacturer. The scale of the deal demonstrates how the AI boom is reshaping the global semiconductor industry. Competition is no longer limited to building the fastest processor. Companies must now deliver complete systems combining computing power, networking, software and energy efficiency. Qualcomm’s expansion into data centers remains an ambitious challenge, but its alliance with Amazon gives the company something every new competitor needs: a powerful customer prepared to purchase technology on an enormous scale.  © GPC NEWS 2026
